It is developed under the\u00a0GPLv2\u00a0(General Public License version 2) by the original developers of MySQL and is intended to remain open source.<\/p>\n

It has proven\u00a0to achieve high compatibility with MySQL. For starters, you can read\u00a0MariaDB vs MySQL<\/a>\u00a0features for more information and importantly, it is used by big companies\/organizations such as Wikipedia, WordPress.com, Google plus and many more.<\/p>\n

In this article, we will show you how to install\u00a0MariaDB 10.1\u00a0stable version in various Debian and Ubuntu distribution releases.<\/p>\n

Install MariaDB in Debian and Ubuntu<\/h3>\n

1.\u00a0Before installing MariaDB, you\u2019ll have to import the repository key and add the MariaDB repository with the following commands:<\/p>\n

On Debian 10(Sid)<\/h4>\n
$ sudo apt-get install software-properties-common\r\n$ sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 0xF1656F24C74CD1D8\r\n$ sudo add-apt-repository 'deb [arch=amd64,i386] http:\/\/www.ftp.saix.net\/DB\/mariadb\/repo\/10.1\/debian sid main'\r\n<\/pre>\n
On Debian 9 (Stretch)<\/h4>\n
$ sudo apt-get install software-properties-common\r\n$ sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 0xF1656F24C74CD1D8\r\n$ sudo add-apt-repository 'deb [arch=amd64] http:\/\/www.ftp.saix.net\/DB\/mariadb\/repo\/10.1\/debian stretch main'\r\n<\/pre>\n
On Debian 8 (Jessie)<\/h4>\n

On Ubuntu 14.04 (Trusty)<\/h4>\n
$ sudo apt-get install software-properties-common\r\n$ sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver hkp:\/\/keyserver.ubuntu.com:80 0xcbcb082a1bb943db\r\n$ sudo add-apt-repository 'deb [arch=amd64,i386,ppc64el] http:\/\/www.ftp.saix.net\/DB\/mariadb\/repo\/10.1\/ubuntu trusty main'\r\n<\/pre>\n
<\/ins><\/ins><\/ins><\/center>2.\u00a0Then update the system packages sources list, and install\u00a0MariaDB\u00a0server like so:<\/p>\n
$ sudo apt-get update\r\n$ sudo apt-get install mariadb-server\r\n<\/pre>\n
During the course of installation, you\u2019ll be asked to configure the MariaDB server; set a secure root user password in the interface below.<\/p>\n

Re-enter the password and press\u00a0[Enter]\u00a0to continue with the installation process.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0When the installation of\u00a0MariaDB\u00a0packages completes, start the database server daemon for the mean time and enable it to start automatically at the next boot as follows:<\/p>\n
------------- On SystemD Systems ------------- \r\n$ sudo systemctl start mariadb\r\n$ sudo systemctl enable mariadb\r\n$ sudo systemctl status mariadb\r\n------------- On SysVinit Systems ------------- \r\n$ sudo service mysql  start \r\n$ chkconfig --level 35 mysql on\r\nOR\r\n$ update-rc.d mysql defaults\r\n$ sudo service mysql status\r\n<\/pre>\n

4.\u00a0Then run the\u00a0mysql_secure_installation<\/code>\u00a0script to secure the database where you can:<\/p>\n
    \n
  1. set root password (if not set in the configuration step above).<\/li>\n
  2. disable remote root login<\/li>\n
  3. remove test database<\/li>\n
  4. remove anonymous users and<\/li>\n
  5. reload privileges<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
    $ sudo mysql_secure_installation\r\n<\/pre>\n
